Does ISO 12312-2 Apply to Camera Solar Filters?
What the standard actually covers
ISO 12312-2 is the international standard for filters intended for direct viewing of the Sun with your eyes — eclipse glasses and handheld viewers. The American Astronomical Society's eye-safety guidance explains that viewers meeting the standard reduce sunlight to safe, comfortable levels for direct naked-eye viewing. That is the job the standard was written for. It was not written as a specification for camera equipment, which is why the question "is this camera filter ISO 12312-2 compliant?" is subtly the wrong question. Why cameras are a different problem than eyes
A camera lens, telescope, or pair of binoculars concentrates sunlight. That is the crucial difference. NASA's eclipse safety guidance is explicit on the resulting rule: never look at the Sun through any optical device while wearing eclipse glasses, because the concentrated rays can burn through the filter and injure your eye. The same concentration is why you cannot treat eclipse glasses held behind a lens as protection for a camera — the filter has to go on the front of the optics, where it cuts the sunlight down before anything concentrates it.
So a proper camera solar filter is a full-aperture filter mounted over the front of the lens. Many are made from the same solar filter film sold for telescopes, and that film is often manufactured and tested to the ISO 12312-2 transmission requirements — which is why you see the standard cited on camera-oriented products. The label is telling you about the material's light-blocking performance, not that a standards body designed it specifically for photography.
What to check when buying one
Because labels can be printed by anyone, the sourcing matters as much as the wording. The AAS maintains a vetted list of suppliers of safe solar viewers and filters whose products genuinely conform to the standard — it covers eclipse glasses, telescope filters, and filter sheets and film suitable for camera use. Buying from that list, or from a vendor that appears on it, is the practical way to avoid counterfeit film. Beyond provenance, look for:
- Full and secure coverage. The filter must cover the entire front aperture with no gaps, and fit snugly enough that wind or handling cannot dislodge it.
- Undamaged material. Inspect film against a bright light for pinholes, scratches, or creases before mounting it.
- Front mounting only. A filter that screws into the rear of a lens or drops in near the sensor is in the concentrated light path — that is not how solar film is meant to be used.

One filter job the standard doesn't do
A front-mounted solar filter handles the brightness problem for your camera. It does not turn the camera into a safe viewing device for your eyes in every configuration — for anything involving your eyes and the Sun, follow the AAS safety guidance rather than improvising. And remember that during a partial eclipse there is no phase at which an unfiltered lens pointed at the Sun is a good idea, for the sensor or for you.
